Klaus Martens, Paul Morris, eds. American and Canadian Literature and Culture: Across a Latitudinal Line. Saarbrücken: Centre for Canadian and Anglo-American Cultures/Amarant Presse, 2008. 231 p.

This volume presents selected papers given at three conferences. The first was presented by members of the CCAC and hosted by the Canadian Comparative Literature Association at the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg (1 June 2004). The following conference was hosted by the CCAC at the Universität des Saarlandes (28-30 October 2004). The CCAC then hosted a small international symposium devoted to “Emerging Modernisms in Canada and the United States 1914-1941: A Comparative Approach” at the Universität des Saarlandes, which concluded the series (17-19 February 2006).

Guest lecture: "'A Complicated Kindness': The Contribution of Female Authors to Contemporary Canadian Mennonite Writing"

In this talk, I will have a look at the contribution of female Mennonite writers to contemporary Canadian writing. Mennonite society is sometimes, but not always characterized by religious fundamentalism and social conservatism. In addition to the characteristic traces of the multilingual history of the Mennonite community, the confrontation with these conservative features render the contribution of female authors such as Di Brandt, Miriam Toews and Sandra Birdsell to the growing field of Mennonite writing especially challenging and interesting.

PD Dr. Paul Morris verlässt zum Sommersemester 2008 den Lehrstuhl Nordamerikanische Literatur und Kultur um mit seiner Familie nach Kanada zu gehen. Seine Veranstaltungen am Lehrstuhl finden daher nicht statt.

Vortrag im Rahmen der öffentlichen Ringvorlesung der Universität im Saarbrücker Rathaus

Alle Interessierten sind herzlich eingeladen.

Der Vortrag wird in einer Art amerikanisch-dichterisch-deutschen literarischen Revue „Glas“ und das „Gläserne“, Transparentes und Reflektierendes sowie unterschiedliche Sehweisen davon vorstellen. Eine optimistisch-utopische ist die von Paul Scheerbart: „Die Erdoberfläche würde sich sehr verändern, wenn überall die Backsteinarchitektur von der Glasarchitektur verdrängt würde. / Es wäre so, als umkleidete sich die Erde mit einem Brillianten- und Emailschmuck. / Die Herrlichkeit ist gar nicht auszudenken“ (1915). Orwell sah und begriff Transparenz natürlich anders. Aber gilt seine Dystopie für uns?
